Plug vs Muff Decision

Ear plugs offer higher comfort for sustained wear, better compatibility with helmets and face shields, and lower per-shift cost — but require proper insertion training to achieve their rated attenuation. Muffs are easier to verify (visible seal) and faster to don/doff for intermittent exposure. Many sites issue both: muffs for noisy task entry and plugs for sustained exposure.
